There are two types of salt: sea salt and table salt. The former is often confused with unrefined sea salt (that is, “ultra fine” sea salt), which is commonly used in baking, cooking and health food stores for its lack of chemicals added during the process of harvesting and making it. As it turns out, both types of salt have almost the same mineral content (although the latter does contain a small amount of magnesium and potassium). However, the one which is more refined is generally used as a seasoning in cuisines, whereas the sea salt has a higher concentration of sodium and therefore is more commonly referred to as table salt.

Unrefined crystal salt is obtained from the sea floor by natural evaporation; this means that the salt content is almost 100%. Unrefined crystal salt is subjected to little or no processing, and the natural elements present in it are left intact – usually by the unrefined nature of the process used in obtaining the salt. As a result, compared to refined salt, unrefined crystal salt is not exposed to chemical treatment, thus leaving behind the all-natural minerals present in seawater, which were lost during the process of extracting salt from rocks.

The properties found in Himalayan salt crystals are the key towards the numerous health benefits associated with this type of salt. Its effectiveness as a healing agent dates back to the early Ayurvedic texts, and continues to be seen today even in various forms of alternative and complementary medicine.
