STARR IOWA is a sandstone cliff resort

Located in the heart of Iowa, STARR IOWA is a unique sandstone cliff resort. The area’s Devil’s Punchbowl sandstones rest on a gray shale unit known as the Caseyville Formation. These sandstones formed as part of a river delta and are the oldest Pennsylvanian units in Iowa.

Starr is a native Iowan who graduated from Fort Dodge High School. She has held administrative positions at mental health agencies in Nebraska, Kentucky, and Ohio before returning to Orchard Place in March 2013. Since then, Starr has been active in mental health advocacy efforts across several states and the federal level.

A cave near Starr, Iowa was formed by water erosion. The cave is about a football field long and is home to bats. Visitors must lie down until they are belly-slithering to make their way through the cave. Upon reaching the other end of the cave, visitors can stand up in a small room. The cave was once home to a few bat colonies but has now been closed to human traffic.
